The World Needs More Security Guards: A Great Career Choice for 2020

Posted on

So, you’ve just graduated high school and you’re not sure you want to sign up for a four-year university or college degree. Maybe you’ve already started a career, but you just aren’t finding the work as satisfying as you once did. Choosing a career is a difficult decision. You want to make sure that you pick something that ensures you see a job when you graduate. After all, why spend all that money on training in a specific field, when there aren’t many job opportunities available in that industry? It might surprise you to learn that this isn’t true for security guards. Security is actually a rapidly growing field. Why? Well, you’ll have to keep reading to find out why the world needs more security guards, making it a great career choice for 2020.

Here’s Why You Should Become a Security Guard:

According to recent Canadian reports, security guards are and will continue to be in demand throughout and beyond 2020. The main reason for this increase in demand has to do with the change in global security. More people are travelling, and more people have access to buildings and sites than ever before. Hiring or having a security guard or security guard team acts as the first line of defense against acts of terror or violence. A security guard can act before the police are even called, and this can save lives.

So, while in the past security guards have often just been associated with late-night shifts and watching black and white surveillance monitors, security guards in 2020 can take on a lot more responsibility.

Finding Your New Career: Security Guard Training Traits

For some people, deciding to become a security guard is easy. For others, it might take a bit more convincing. One of the best ways to determine whether or not you’re making the right career choice in 2020, is to take a look at your personality traits.

The reason why you should examine your personality traits in more detail is that certain ones lend themselves to certain careers. For example, you wouldn’t want to become a writer if you didn’t enjoy reading or sitting for long hours. Why would your approach to becoming a security guard be any different? So, if you’re still on the fence, check out the following traits in great security guards:

Great Communicators

As a security guard, you will need to be able to communicate well with everyone you meet. You will need to work with your client to understand his or her needs. You will also need to be able to communicate with intruders or individuals who need to leave the property or premises. In some situations, a security guard must lead a team. In these cases, communication is key! Every member of the security guard team must know where they need to be and what they need to do during his or her shift. If something happens, the whole team needs to communicate with one another to deal with the situation.

Good Writers

Writing reports is a skill that all security guards must have (or develop). Part of a security guard’s duties includes writing reports that explain an incident in detail. If you have a talent for getting down the important details in a clear and concise way, choosing a career as a security guard is a great way to make use of that particular skill.

Attention to Detail

Let’s say you’re out for a walk and you witness a minor fender bender at an intersection. Are you the type of person who can remember every detail of the accident, down to the color of the victim’s shoes? Or, do you have difficulty remembering things intense situations? The truth is, security guards, require great attention to detail. The reason for this is because if an incident occurs, a security guard must be able to relay the facts clearly and calmly to the authorities. The more detail a security guard is able to provide, the better the chances of recovering stolen products or identifying an intruder.

Ability to Focus for Long Hours

A security guard’s primary job is to keep an eye on property or product. What this means is that a security guard is often working when everyone else is asleep. However, it’s also possible to be working while no one is around during the day. For example, condominium security guards are posted in a lobby reception 24 hours a day. The point is, security guards must be able to deal with long hours of quiet and solitude and still remain focused on protecting property or product.

As you might’ve guessed, there’s more to being a good security guard than personality traits. Part of earning the job is going through the security guard training course. If you feel you’ve got what it takes, here’s what you’ll need to know to earn your security guard license.

The Security Guard Training Course

In Ontario, security guards are regulated through the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS). The reason for this is because the government wanted to ensure that those who enter the security guard industry come well equipped to deal with any situation. In addition, the government wanted to make sure that the job of a police officer and security guard did not overlap. For example, in Ontario, a security guard cannot carry a gun, while a police officer can carry a gun.

It is also for this reason that a security guard must earn his or her license. It’s why there is a security guard training course. The one thing to note is that while different agencies can offer a security guard training course, the MCSCS does not define the cost you must pay for that training course. Therefore, the fees for security guard training is up to the agency, while the training course material is not.

On the Job: Security Guard Training Material

The security guard training course is a total of 40 hours. For those of you who prefer to take your training online, you’re in luck! This is an option that is offered by many agencies.

One of the most important things to remember is to find the right security guard training course. It’s not enough to do a quick Google search and click on the first advertisement you find. The reason for this is because people, unfortunately, do run training scams. It doesn’t happen often, but if you’re going to spend money to start a new and exciting career, you want to make sure you get started on the right foot. In order to avoid any scams, you’ll want to find a few agencies with great reviews. If you call the agency and ask them questions about their security guard training course, it will help you to figure out which one is for you.

One of the ways in which you can decide whether or not you’ve picked a good security guard training course is to ask questions about the course topics. The agency should be able to talk about the following:

  • Report Writing
  • Use of Force Theory
  • Legal Authorities
  • Health and Safety
  • Basic Security Procedures
  • Canadian Legal System
  • Sensitivity Training
  • Legal Authorities
  • Effective Communications

In addition (and as mentioned above), reviews are also a good way to decide on which security guard training course you should take. A good agency will have good reviews. The agency will not try to force you to sign up for anything.

Security Guard License Earned! What’s Next for 2020?

Once you’ve completed the security guard training course, the instructor will get you to write a security guard exam. After you take and pass the security guard exam, you will receive your license! At this point, you can apply for security guard positions across Ontario.

Applying for a job takes time and effort. It’s the one thing that can make starting a new career seem a bit daunting. The good news is, many agencies that offer security guard training also help their students find a job once they’ve earned their license. What this means is, if you put in a good effort and show the right kind of work ethic, you could likely see yourself working as a security guard within days of graduation. There aren’t too many careers that can offer that kind of opportunity!

It might interest you to know that in Ontario, it is possible for you to earn both a security guard license and a private investigator license. You must take training for both, but the ability to have both licenses really opens many doors for a long career in either field.

No matter what, if you decide to start a career as a security guard, know that you’ve picked an in-demand opportunity. Taking the security guard training course and earning your license will help you to find employment quickly, which isn’t a bad way to start 2020.
