Scam of the Week: Fake Service Ontario Radar Ticket Text Message

Have you received a text message claiming to be from Service Ontario, accusing you of an unpaid radar ticket and threatening legal consequences if you don’t pay immediately?

If so, you’re not alone. This message is a scam, and it’s important that you do not click any links or share any personal information.

What the Scam Looks Like

Here is a real example of the message that was recently received:

From: +63 910 314 4247

“Service Ontario: Our system speed camera shows your radar ticket still hasn’t been paid, to avoid any loss of demerit points pay by August 7, 2025. See Ontario Administrative Code 15C-16.003, if you do not complete payment by August 7, 2025 we will do the following:

1. report it to the DMV violation database

2. suspend your vehicle registration effective on August 7, 2025

3. suspend your licence for 30 days

4. referral to a toll booth with a 35% service fee

5. you may be prosecuted and your credit score may be affected

Please pay immediately before execution to avoid licence

The link in this message (https://ontario.safedrivinggt.cc) is fraudulent and may lead to phishing websites that steal your personal or financial information. Do not open it, and do not respond to the message.

Red Flags That Prove It’s a Scam

Here’s how you can tell this is a scam:

1. Foreign Phone Number
The message comes from +63 910 314 4247, which is a Philippine phone number. Service Ontario does not send legitimate notifications from international numbers.

2. Incorrect Terminology
The message mentions the DMV, a term used in the United States—not in Ontario. Ontario uses the Ministry of Transportation and ServiceOntario, not the DMV.

3. Fake Law Reference
There is no such thing as “Ontario Administrative Code 15C-16.003.” Ontario law follows the Highway Traffic Act, not administrative codes like this.

4. Threats and Urgency
Scammers often try to panic you into acting quickly. The threats of licence suspension, registration suspension, prosecution, and credit score damage are exaggerated and designed to make you click without thinking.

5. Unofficial Web Address
Any legitimate Service Ontario website will end in .gov.on.ca or ontario.ca. The link shown here—ontario.safedrivinggt.cc—is a deceptive imitation.

6. Poor Grammar
Phrases like “before execution to avoid licence” are not professionally written and indicate the message was not composed by a government agency.

What the Scammers Want

The purpose of this scam is to:

• Trick you into entering credit card or banking information

• Gain access to your personal identity details

• Possibly install malicious software on your device

• Use your information in future scams or fraudulent purchases

• Do not reply to the message

• Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

• Verify any claims directly through ServiceOntario’s official website
