Spotting and Preventing Investment Fraud This October!

Spotting and Preventing Investment Fraud This October!

The Smith Investigation Agency wishes everybody a wonderful October! As the leaves begin to change colours and the year draws to a close, we encourage you to concentrate on the somewhat hidden yet critical focus of the time—fraud awareness and cybersecurity.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. This year, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) has chosen the theme, Get Cyber Safe – for the future you. This emphasizes the fact that online self-protection extends beyond changing passwords and securing devices. It encompasses protecting your finances and your identity, as well as your future.

Each week of the month is dedicated to a different focus on online safety. Unfortunately, investment fraud is the most common cybercrime that affects thousands of Canadians. This week, we will focus on investment fraud.

The Growing Cost of Investment Fraud in Canada

Investment fraud is not a new crime, but in recent years it has become increasingly sophisticated and devastating. In 2024 alone, Canadians reported losing $310 million to investment fraud across just 4,000 cases. Even more troubling, the CAFC estimates that fewer than 10% of frauds are ever reported — meaning the true cost could be well over $3 billion annually.

That’s money taken from hardworking Canadians trying to build their retirement, save for a home, or grow their family’s future.

Fraudsters prey on ambition and trust, using polished websites, fake endorsements, and emotional pressure to lure people into scams. Whether through crypto investments, “guaranteed” stock opportunities, or fake pension schemes, they exploit hopes of financial security to line their own pockets.

How Investment Fraud Works

Investment scams can appear in many forms, but they often share common tactics:

  • High returns, zero risk: Scammers promise the impossible — big profits with no chance of loss.
  • Urgency and pressure: Victims are told they must “act fast” before the opportunity disappears.
  • False credibility: Fraudsters impersonate advisors, celebrities, or even government agencies to appear trustworthy.
  • Vanishing funds: Once money is sent — often overseas — it’s extremely difficult to recover.

These scams reach Canadians through social media ads, emails, texts, or even people met on dating apps. Increasingly, fraudsters also set up fake crypto trading platforms that appear legitimate but exist solely to drain funds.

Common Types of Investment Fraud

To protect yourself, it helps to know what kinds of scams are out there. Some of the most common include:

  • Offshore investment fraud: Promises of tax-free profits from abroad, but once money is wired overseas, it vanishes.
  • Pension scams: Fraudsters target those nearing retirement with offers to unlock locked-in pension funds, only to funnel them into high-risk or fake investments.
  • Precious gem schemes: Selling overpriced or fake stones as “rare” assets that are almost impossible to resell.
  • Fixed income scams: Fake bonds or GICs promising unusually high returns.
  • Pump-and-dump scams: Inflating a stock’s value through false hype, then dumping it and leaving victims with worthless shares.
  • Cryptocurrency fraud: Fake coins, fake trading platforms, and scams disguised as Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). Victims think they’re buying into the next Bitcoin — but the currency doesn’t exist.

Red Flags to Watch For

How can you tell if an “opportunity” is really a trap? Look for these warning signs:

  • Guaranteed or risk-free returns — no legitimate investment can promise this.
  • Unregistered companies or advisors — always verify registration through your provincial securities regulator or the National Registration Search Tool.
  • High-pressure sales tactics — legitimate opportunities will give you time to think.
  • Unsolicited offers — if it comes through a text, social media, or a new online contact, be cautious.
  • Requests for new crypto accounts — fraudsters often pressure victims into opening wallets they control.
  • Conflicting stories — especially if you’re dealing with someone met on dating apps or social media who suddenly turns financial.

How to Protect Yourself

While scammers are creative, there are simple steps you can take to protect your future:

  • Do your research: Verify the company, the advisors, and the investment details. Look for reviews or warnings online.
  • Check registration: Use official tools to confirm the legitimacy of financial professionals.
  • Take your time: Never rush into a decision, no matter how promising it sounds.
  • Be skeptical of crypto hype: The crypto market is volatile and unregulated — if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Talk to a trusted advisor: If in doubt, consult with a financial professional before parting with your money.

What to Do If You’ve Been Targeted

If you suspect you’ve been the victim of fraud, don’t suffer in silence. Report it to:

  • Your local police service
  • The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501)

Even if you didn’t lose money, reporting helps authorities track trends and protect others.

Protecting Your Future Starts Now

Fraudsters are constantly evolving their methods, but so can you. By building strong cyber habits, questioning “guaranteed” opportunities, and staying alert to the warning signs, you can protect your hard-earned savings and ensure a safer future for yourself and your loved ones.

This October, let’s commit to making not just our devices, but our investments, more secure. Stay informed. Stay skeptical. Stay safe.

From all of us at The Smith Investigation Agency: Happy Cyber Security Awareness Month — and here’s to a safer, fraud-free future for you.
